Many women's health conditions remain undiagnosed when doctors rely solely on routine blood tests, according to Dr Mohan, a radiologist advocating for comprehensive diagnostic approaches. Conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), uterine fibroids, and ovarian cysts often require imaging techniques like ultrasound and MRI for accurate detection.

While blood tests effectively measure hormone levels, blood sugar, and cholesterol, they cannot visualise structural abnormalities in reproductive organs. Dr Mohan emphasises that women experiencing irregular periods, pelvic pain, or unexplained abdominal discomfort should undergo imaging tests alongside standard blood work. This integrated approach has become increasingly important as lifestyle diseases rise across India, particularly in states like Bihar where awareness about women's health remains limited.

Common conditions that imaging can detect include endometriosis, adenomyosis, and early-stage ovarian abnormalities. Ultrasound scans, being non-invasive and affordable, serve as the first line of investigation. However, access to quality imaging facilities remains a challenge in rural Bihar, where many primary health centres lack basic ultrasound equipment.

Health experts recommend that women above 30 should include pelvic ultrasound in their annual health check-ups, especially those with family histories of reproductive health issues. Early detection through proper screening can prevent complications and improve treatment outcomes significantly.
