NEW DELHI — The Madhya Pradesh government has announced plans to establish a cultural complex named Maa Saraswati Lok alongside a Raja Bhoj Research Institute in Dhar district, according to reports. The initiative follows a recent judicial determination by the state's High Court regarding the status of the historically contested Bhojshala complex.
The High Court ruling, delivered earlier this month, formally recognised the Bhojshala site as a temple dedicated to Goddess Saraswati, bringing legal clarity to a structure that has been the subject of prolonged disputes between Hindu and Muslim communities. The 11th-century monument has been claimed as both the temple of Vagdevi (Saraswati) and the Kamal Maula mosque, with both communities exercising worship rights on different days under existing arrangements.
Raja Bhoj, the legendary Paramara dynasty ruler who reigned from 1010 to 1055 CE, is credited with establishing numerous educational institutions and architectural marvels across central India. The planned research institute bearing his name is expected to focus on historical and cultural studies related to his contributions to Sanskrit literature, engineering, and statecraft. Dhar served as an important centre of learning during his reign.
The new complex represents a significant cultural investment in the region, which houses several monuments from the medieval period. Details regarding the project's timeline and budgetary allocation have not yet been disclosed by state authorities.
