LUCKNOW — A tragic road accident in Amroha district of Uttar Pradesh resulted in three fatalities and left five people injured on Tuesday after a heavy goods vehicle veered off its path and toppled onto a group of worshippers assembled near a local temple, according to reports from local police authorities.

The incident occurred when the truck driver apparently lost control of the vehicle, causing it to skid off the roadway before overturning onto devotees who had congregated in the temple vicinity. Emergency response teams were dispatched to the location following the accident, and the injured have been shifted to nearby medical facilities for treatment. Police officials have initiated an investigation into the circumstances leading to the mishap.

Uttar Pradesh has witnessed a concerning pattern of road accidents in recent years, with heavy vehicles involved in numerous fatal incidents across the state. The northern state recorded over 20,000 road accident deaths in 2022, making it among India's most hazardous states for road safety. Accidents involving trucks and other commercial vehicles often occur due to factors including driver fatigue, vehicle overloading, poor road conditions, and inadequate enforcement of traffic regulations.

Authorities have not yet disclosed whether the truck driver has been detained or what charges may be filed in connection with Tuesday's incident. The tragedy underscores persistent challenges in ensuring pedestrian safety near religious sites, which frequently attract large gatherings along highways and busy thoroughfares.
