As temperatures soar across Bihar, nutrition experts are recommending crispy lentil pancakes—commonly known as dal cheelas—as an optimal breakfast choice for those pursuing weight loss and overall wellness during summer months.

Dr Anjali Sharma, a Patna-based dietitian, explains that lentils provide approximately 18 grams of protein per 100 grams, making these pancakes significantly more satiating than traditional refined flour options. "The high protein content helps maintain muscle mass during weight loss while keeping hunger at bay for longer periods," she noted. The addition of fresh spices like cumin and green chillies not only enhances flavour but also aids digestion and boosts metabolism naturally.

The accompanying coconut chutney adds healthy fats and additional nutrients without excessive calories, creating a nutritionally balanced meal. In rural Bihar, where lentils remain a dietary staple and affordable protein source, this dish offers an accessible path to healthier eating habits without straining household budgets.

Health officials emphasise that such traditional recipes align well with the National Health Mission's focus on preventing lifestyle diseases through dietary modifications. The dish requires minimal oil when prepared on non-stick surfaces, making it heart-friendly whilst remaining light enough for Bihar's humid summer climate. Nutritionists recommend consuming these pancakes within two hours of waking for optimal energy throughout the morning.
