Iron deficiency remains one of India's most widespread nutritional challenges, with Bihar recording some of the highest anaemia rates in the country. Health professionals warn that many people dismiss early warning signs until the condition becomes severe.
Dr Rajesh Kumar from Patna's Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences explains that unexplained fatigue is often the first indicator people ignore. "Patients attribute tiredness to work stress, not realising their body is struggling with low haemoglobin," he notes. Other commonly overlooked symptoms include persistent headaches, unusual hair loss, and brittle nails that break easily. Many also experience frequent breathlessness during routine activities like climbing stairs.
Lesser-known signs include cold hands and feet even in warm weather, pale skin and gums, restless leg syndrome at night, and frequent infections due to weakened immunity. Perhaps most surprisingly, some people develop unusual cravings for non-food items like ice or dirt—a condition called pica.
The National Family Health Survey-5 data shows that 63% of children and 58% of women in Bihar suffer from anaemia. Experts recommend regular blood tests, particularly for pregnant women and adolescent girls. Simple dietary changes incorporating green leafy vegetables, jaggery, and fortified foods can help, though severe cases require medical intervention and iron supplementation under professional guidance.
