New Delhi: The government on Monday tabled the highly anticipated Judicial Reform Bill in the Lok Sabha, triggering immediate protests from the Opposition who accused the ruling coalition of attempting to undermine judicial independence.
The bill, which proposes changes to the collegium system and the appointment process for High Court and Supreme Court judges, has been a subject of intense debate since leaked cabinet minutes surfaced last month.
Senior advocate and constitutional expert Madhav Kumar told The Supreme Voice: "This legislation, if passed in its current form, would fundamentally shift the balance between the three pillars of democracy. Parliament cannot be allowed to become the sole arbiter of who sits in judgment of Parliament itself."
