Medical professionals are emphasizing the importance of recognizing andropause, often termed 'male menopause', as awareness about men's hormonal health gradually increases across India. The condition, characterized by declining testosterone levels in aging men, affects physical and mental wellbeing but remains underdiagnosed in the country.
Dr. Rajesh Kumar, an endocrinologist at Patna's Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences, explains that andropause typically occurs in men between 40 and 55 years of age. "Unlike female menopause, the hormonal decline in men is gradual. Symptoms include fatigue, mood changes, reduced muscle mass, and decreased libido. Many men dismiss these as normal aging, but medical intervention can significantly improve quality of life," he stated.
According to recent health surveys, fewer than 15 percent of Indian men experiencing andropause symptoms seek medical consultation, partly due to social stigma and lack of awareness. In Bihar, where healthcare infrastructure challenges persist, men's hormonal health remains a particularly neglected area. Experts stress that simple blood tests can diagnose the condition, and treatment options including lifestyle modifications, hormone therapy, and counselling are available.
Health advocates are calling for greater public education on andropause, emphasizing that acknowledging and addressing men's health concerns is crucial for overall family wellbeing in Indian society.
