CHANDIGARH — A 20-year-old woman in Haryana has died by suicide after allegedly being subjected to gang rape and prolonged blackmail by the accused, her family has reported. The perpetrators are said to have recorded the sexual assault and used the footage to intimidate the survivor with threats of circulation on social media platforms.
Family members have stated that the young woman faced continuous psychological torment from the accused, who exploited the video recording to prevent her from seeking justice. The circumstances leading to her death highlight the vulnerability of sexual assault survivors who face secondary victimisation through digital threats and extortion.
Sexual violence accompanied by video recordings has emerged as a disturbing pattern in recent years across India, with perpetrators using technology to extend their control over victims. Such cases often result in severe mental trauma, discouraging survivors from approaching law enforcement authorities due to fear of social stigma and public exposure. The Information Technology Act, 2000, and provisions under the Indian Penal Code criminalise both the non-consensual recording and distribution of intimate content.
Experts emphasise that survivors of sexual violence require comprehensive support systems including immediate legal intervention, psychological counselling, and protection from secondary abuse. This incident underscores the urgent need for strengthened mechanisms to address technology-enabled sexual crimes and ensure survivor safety throughout the justice process.
